a biopsy in verse
A small publication written, illustrated, and designed by me. A personal project combining my writing and design.
This project was a bit different, as it was using my own poetry to inform my design. In my poetry, I explore the emotional self in an effort to illustrate my mental health with words; in that, I tap into the anatomical, so I explore that idea in both the stitching of the book and the imagery I use.
The poetry is sort of a close and concentrated glimpse into the most extreme of my emotions, so the imagery is visceral, complex, and difficult to follow.
The idea of “biopsy” came with how I feel the poetry is functioning. I am picking a small part of myself out and digging around to try to gain a better understanding of it.
I also utilized a different texture paper, one which resembles a wrinkled skin, that diffuses the imagery and forces you to physically interact with the words.
